Reopening of the Farnese collection

Napoli Piazza Museo Nazionale 19 Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Napoli

October 2, 2009 - October 2, 2010

Naples

The Archaeological Museum in Naples presents a new setting up of the Farnese Collection, transfered from Rome during the 18th century to constitute the first core of the Real Bourbon Museum. Started in the XVI century by the "Grand Cardinal" Alessandro Farnese (future Pope Paul III), the collection is among the greatest series of ancient sculptures in the world and it includes the extraordinary ancient sculptures found in the Forum, in Adrian's Temple and in the Baths of Caracalla, together with paintings and furnitures of the greatest Renaissance artists. On display over 300 sculptures, among which masterpieces like the Venus Kallipygos, the Farnese Atlas, the Tyrannicides, Lisippo's Hercules and the monumental Farnese Bull, together with many 'new' marbles, recognized through researches on archive documents and graphic materials. With its new setting the collection describes the ancient times by showing its masterpieces, as well as the story of two great dynasties, by showing their different approach to expositions.
