Castle of Udine (Civic Museums)
May 21, 2010
- October 31, 2010
Drawings and etchings "of spirited and exquisite taste" by the Venetian Master are on show at the Castle of Udine, Galleria d'Arte Antica, until 31st October. This event marks a long awaited return of the exhibition of the Capricci and Scherzi di Fantasia by Tiepolo 40 years after their last showing.
The complete body of the etchings by Giambattista Tiepolo (1696-1770), painter and engraver from the Venetian Republic, will be on show from 21st May to 31st October at the Galleria d'Arte Antica at the Castle of Udine together with a careful selection of the drawings which are directly linked thematically to the etching plates. All of these side by side with the oil paintings in the Tiepolese patrimony in the Art Gallery in Udine and the cycle of frescoes which Giambattista Tiepolo and his son Giandomenico left to the city, explain why Udine is known as the "City of Tiepolo".
The exhibition is one of the main events in a rich cultural programme envisioned and organised by the cultural office of the capital of Friuli, and in May will include tours of Tiepoli's artistic heritage with apposite historical and scientific notes, as well as baroque musical concerts.
Drawings and etchings will be shown side by side with the original plates thus elucidating the entire process of their reproduction. All in all it promises to be an experience which offers the visitor (novice or expert) the opportunity to get new insight into Tiepolo's creative genius and emerge with deeper appreciation for his artistic versatility and the emotional depth of his art.
