The name derives from the Latin name "Allius. Town in the province of Asti, famous for its thermal bath and spa facilities, located not far from the regional capital and whose territory is composed of a number of districts. This village is situated on a hill between the valleys of Nizza and Tiglione, in a privileged position. It is famous for hot springs from which flow mineral waters with extraordinary anti-inflammatory properties. The local inhabitants are mainly devoted to agriculture and produce an excellent Barbera.
Besides the name, the discovery of a Roman tombstone in the area, evidence that Agliano was founded by the Romans. The center acquired a strong reputation in medieval times, being the residence of Bonifacio di Agliano, who married the widow of Manfredo I Lancia, and whose daughter Bianca, born from the relationship with his first wife, was the mother of the children of the Emperor Frederico II, Costanza e Manfredi. The town was initially involved in the clashes between Asti and Alessandria, then in those between the Guelphs and Ghibellines. In the first half of the XVI century, the territory became part of the domain of the Savoy, and during the clashes between the Savoy and the Spanish, the castle was completely destroyed. At the end of the Second World War the citizens were awarded with a special committee by the key role played in the partisan resistance.
Not to miss:
- the Church of San Giacomo Maggiore, built in the middle of the XVII century and is situated in the village square. It was destroyed by the Spanish troops and was rebuilt in 1657. It appears in Gothic style and preserves inside an XVIII century polychrome marble altar and a XV century wooden crucifix;
- the Confraternity of St. Michael, also located in the main square, is now desecrated. It was built between the late XVII and early XVIII centuries, in Baroque style;
- the Church of Santa Croce, which dates back to 1855;
- the Church of San Sebastian, built in 1809;
- the Sanctuary of the Annunciation in the district of Molizzo, which is also the oldest church of the area, even though the first document dates back only to the XVII century. From its location it is possible to admire a great view over the surrounding panorama;
- the Church of St. Mary Magdalene in the village of Bologna;
- the XIX century Church in the district of Vianoce;
- the early XX century Church of San Rocco;
- the Church of Saint Anthony in the district of Dogliano;
- the Church of Our Lady of Peace in the village of Salere.
